An Emmy Award for our documentary about the Pegasus spyware
Shortlisted for the Emmys in the ‘Outstanding Investigative Documentary’ and ‘Outstanding Research’ categories for the documentary Global Spyware Scandal: Exposing Pegasus, co-produced with Frontline PBS, Arte, BBC Storyville, Forbidden Films and Mediawan, Forbidden Stories is proud to announce that it won an Emmy Award in the first category. The documentary delves into the backstage of the Pegasus Project, an international collaborative investigation coordinated by Forbidden Stories in 2021 that revealed a global spying system used by more than 65 states against journalists, lawyers, human rights activists, state leaders and political opponents.
At the ceremony, which took place in New York on September 26th, Laurent Richard, founder and executive director of Forbidden Stories expressed his gratitude to all partners who participated in this project. “That story was a dangerous one. And we needed a network of brave journalists around the world to reveal the misuse of a spyware called Pegasus. I hope this collaborative effort is just the beginning of a global movement of journalists who believe that we are stronger together when we are facing death threats.” he said in his acceptance speech.
At the request of the Television Academy and PBS, Laurent Richard was one of the presenters at the Emmy Awards Ceremony. On this occasion, he reminded the audience that we continue to face the same challenges: our democracies remain at risk. “Today, with the rise of authoritarianism, disinformation and wars, acting alone is a sure way to become killed. To survive in this world is all about collaboration.”
